Adorable and one of a kind, Viola and her mother take great pride in their beautifully curated shop. They have clothing and antiques going back to the 1800s, including functional art deco watches. I came for a quick interview and ended up staying for 4 hours talking with Viola about social justice issues all over the world. You don’t want to leave Budapest without stopping first here. When you are finished shopping head across the street to Cafe Toldi for some underground electronic music, a film, or a dance party.

This place is very to miss. The only way to really find it is to look at the map and when you get close, ask someone. Super cute and funky, lots of secret rooms that you have to crawl or climb a rope ladder to find. Shoes not allowed in the pillow rooms. Beautiful and relaxing. Not Wheelchair accessible.

Hip, calm cafe and movie theater that turns into a great dance club at night ($4 for movies, $1-3 cover for large parties). Not the friendliest staff but they do all speak English. Pretty quick turnover with tables and absolutely queer friendly. They hosted the most diverse ‘lesbian party’ I have ever been to and have something going on almost every night from concerts to live DJs.

With over 13 rooms, live music every night, movie showings, delicious food, hookah, cheap drinks, and never a cover, the first ruin pub (a bar/pub/club in a formerly abandoned building) is not a place to miss. You will find both tourists and locals every night of the week and the place is packed on weekends. Get lost in the building or grab a map (yes, a map) of the building as you come in the front door. Of the three we suggest, this is the most low key. For more of a club scene head to Fogashàz. If you’re looking for great live music of all sorts head to Instant. These are all located in the Jewish District and easily walkable. When you’re done for the night, take the 4-6 Tram that runs all night, back home.

Play chess while soaking in one of the indoor/outdoor 15 spring-fed thermal pools or go for a swim in one of the 3 swimming pools in the largest medicinal bath in Budapest (one of the largest in all of Europe). Built in 1913, Széchenyi was the first bath in Pest and is arguably the most decadent. Soaks in the baths are considered medical treatment and are often prescribed by doctors giving patients a reduced price. Located in City Park, walk outside the bath and grab some mulled wine and grilled corn on your way to the largest outdoor ice skating rink in Europe, hop on the 1st subway system in Europe (line 1, yellow) or take a stroll down Andrássy Utça.

Except for the more money, dirty busses, and days without shower. Yes, Europe is more expensive than Asia and Africa, but how to do it cheaply is another post. This post, my friends, is about my first […]
